Examining Fruit

Luke 6:43-49. What does the fruit in your life look like? Is it good fruit? Jesus teaching in the Sermon on the Mount consistently paints the picture of two men: The blessed and the cursed. In today’s passage Jesus speaks of the fruit of a man’s life as evidence of which one of those categories he belongs in.

Good Friday! What makes it good?

To understand why what we celebrate at Easter is good, we need to go all the way back to the days of Moses in the land of Egypt. God directed the Israelites to take the blood of a lamb and mark their doorposts to be a sign to them and to Him, that the destroyer would not touch them. God was working both deliverance and judgement in the same works, but it worked differently for His people than it did…

Choosing the Twelve

Luke 6:12-16. After spending the night in prayer Jesus chooses the twelve from the larger group of disciples who followed Him. We see that the Lord does not call equipped men, rather He equips those who m He calls. He uses common men to accomplish extraordinary things. He uses the weak, simple, and low men who rest in Him that His name receive all glory in His workings.

Catching Men

Luke 5:1-11. A miraculous catch of fish opens the eyes of Peter, James, and John to the reality of who Jesus is. The result, a glimpse at their own sinfulness, a cry for mercy, and a call to follow. Those men left everything to follow Jesus. Have we?

Merry Christmas

Isaiah 53:1-6, Colossians 1:19-22. Does it seem like the merry part of Christmas is missing sometimes? What reason do we have to be merry? Much reason indeed!

Submission to the Spirit

Luke 4:1-13. Jesus led by the Spirit in the wilderness faces the temptations of Satan. Jesus reveals a great deal to us of the character of God. The more we know this God, the more we will trust and submit to Him.

Witnesses to Jesus identity

Luke 1:21-38. A less familiar portion of the birth story of our Lord, Mary and Joseph submit to the law of God in circumcising Jesus and offering the sacrifice prescribed. They encounter two witnesses in the Temple, Simeon, a righteous and devote man, and Anna, a prophetess who lives an exemplary life who give testimony, under the leading of the Holy Spirit to the identity of this child Jesus.
