Sermons on Self-righteousness (Page 2)

Who Is My Neighbor?

Luke 10:29-37. Responding to the scribe who asked “what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus explains who is the neighbor that is to be loved by telling the parable of the good Samaritan. Do you love you neighbor?

Beatitude Living

Luke 7:1-10. A Centurion seeks Jesus healing for his slave who is at the point of death. Genuine faith is seen in this man, where as the Jews around him demonstrate a worldview completely the opposite. A living example is seen in the Centurion of what it looks like to live the beatitudes.

Blessing and Curse

Luke 6:17-26. Jesus chooses his disciples then proceeds to teach them how to preach. He does this by preaching the greatest sermon ever preached, what we know as the Sermon on the Mount. He begins with a series of blessings and curses. The heart of the gospel message is found in these beatitudes. God’s work in the heart of a man shows itself in spiritual poverty, hunger for righteousness, mourning over sin.

Lord of the Sabbath

Luke 6:1-11. The rules and regulations of the Pharisees for proper observance of the Sabbath were burdensome to Jews, and only a self-righteous man could not see the impossibility of actually keeping each detail. Jesus uses the Sabbath to teach that God is concerned with the heart, not the externals of a man.

Wine and Wine Skins

Luke 5:33-39. Jesus continues revealing the difference between the religion of the righteous, or at least those who think themselves righteous, and the religion of the man who knows he is a sinner in need of God’s mercy.
