Your Name is Written in Heaven

Luke 10:17-24 Where is your joy found? Is it found in victory in the Christian life? Is it found in success in ministry? Jesus tells His people to rejoice that your names are written in heaven. A grand picture of God’s absolute sovereignty in election which is the only way true joy is even possible. Jesus also makes it clear that is bring joy to God to save all those He chose before the foundation of the world to write…

Lambs in the Midst of Wolves

Luke 10:1-16 Jesus expands the ministry beyond the twelve apostles as he sends out the seventy to preach the kingdom of God. This is a critical mission, and one filled with much danger. He gives instruct on how to respond to those who receive the message, and those who reject. It would be better on the day of judgement for the city of Sodom them for those who reject the message of Christ.

Jesus Confronts Modern Evangelicalism

Luke 9:57-62 Three individuals among the crowd around Jesus respond to Jesus with offers to follow as disciples. In this passage we see much that is foreign to modern day evangelicalism. There is a cost to following Jesus. There is a cross to bear.

Determined Toward Mercy

Luke 9:51-56 Jesus willingly set His face toward Jerusalem. He was determined to head to the cross for unworthy sinners like us. As they traveled toward Jerusalem, travelling through Samaria, a village rejects Jesus, and two disciples ask the Lord if they should call down fire from heaven to consume them. Condemnation is not the role of Christians. As Christ came in a mission of mercy, so we are sent to preach the good news in mercy.

Greatness in God’s Economy

Luke 9:46-50. Pride is seen by our world as a virtue, but God sees pride very different. Greatness is found in humility, in serving, and laying aside self.

Simple Faith

Luke 9:37-45 A father brings his child to Jesus for healing. He had begged the disciples to cast the demon out of his son, but they were unable. Power is found in our weakness, when we understand that we don’t have the power needed, but we simply come to Him who does and surrender to His will.

Jesus Transfiguration

Luke 9:28-36 Jesus takes Peter, John, and James up the mountain and witnessed changed in appearance by His disciples as he speaks to Moses and Elijah. Who is Jesus? He is the Son of the Father!

The Crucified Life

Luke 9:23-27 Self denial, daily cross bearing, and following. The result of the saving grace of our Lord. There is a fundamental difference between believers, true disciples of Jesus, and the rest of the world not only in our confession of His identity but also in our response to who He is and what He has done that we might be saved. Though we are great sinners, we have a great savior, enough to save us from the consequence, the…

The must’s of Jesus

Luke 9:21-22 Jesus make it clear that there are some things that must happen in His life and ministry. He must suffer many things, be rejected, be killed, and rise again. As we examine these things we see the gospel message clearly presented.

Jesus Identity Revealed

Luke 9:18-20 Luke’s gospel account has been building toward the climax of Luke’s purpose for writing the book. Jesus identity seems to be in focus, but more than just His identity. We see in this passage both a focus on “who Jesus is” and how men respond to Him. Here we find the most important question anyone could ever be asked, and it is a question everyone must answer: “Who do you say Jesus is?”
